MATLAB Arduino with adafruit shield RPM inconsistent

I am trying to use the MATLAB Arduino Support package to run stepper motors. Specifically, I am using the stepper() and move() functions. When I change the RPM from 2 to 20, the speed does not change. In fact, 2 RPM seems a bit faster than 20 RPM. What could be causing this? There doesn't seem to be any correlation between the input RPM and the observed speed.
