Scatter and plot have pixellated/mishapen markers

Using the default options for plot and scatter my plots within the figure window (even before exporting) are pixellated, with mishapen markers.
plot(x,y,'.')
plot(x,y,'o')
scatter(x,y,'filled')
Increasing the marker size makes the pixellation more visible:
scatter(x,y,80,'filled')
plot(x,y,'.','MarkerSize',15)
How can i make the markers actual circles? I tried:
set(gcf,'GraphicsSmoothing','on')
But there was no visible effect. Thanks!

my graphics are smooth by default (R2020b)

The most common cause of this is needing to update your graphics drivers.
