Best Encryption and Decryption technique for a string

I have a password and a key which I want to store in a configuration file as an encrypted text and when read it in actual script I want to decrypt it. Basically I want to protect certain piece of string in my code. What could be the best way to perform the task at hand? And what would be the best encryption-decryption technique.
