I have purchased MATLAB Student Version. For how long the license is valid for this version?

I have purchased MATLAB Student Version. The name of version is R2014a. For how long the license is valid for this version?

Meghna, the MATLAB student version is a perpetual license. Which means you can use it indefinitely, as long as you are a student, of course. See also the FAQ for reference.

If you purchased software maintenance then the software maintenance ends on that date. On that same page, look upwards to find "Term"; it will probably say "Term: Perpetual"

Yes there is "Term: Perpetual".

So what's this software maintenance? and can I still access MATLAB even when this maintenance ends?

Software maintenance, for your purposes, covers two things:

1. It gets you free updates to MATLAB and your toolboxes for the period covered; and
2. It entitles you to access online documentation for previous releases, not just the most recent release. This does not affect your use of "doc" or "help" within MATLAB: those will give you information for your existing release.

Keeping covered allows you to get the current MATLAB releases as they come out without having to re-purchase the Suite (but not for free; you have to pay the SMS price.) The online documentation is a convenience, but the more out of date your software gets, the more annoying it gets to not be able to easily look at the documentation for the release you have.

I have bought a student license almost a year ago, however Matlab send me an email to extend and buy it again. I thought a student license will have effect as long as I am as a student, as perpetual. Do I need to pay again? Thank you very much in advance.

The message was probably about software maintenance service like discussed above. You do NOT need to pay the fee to continue to use the software. The fee covers upgrades, and access to old documentation, and access to MATLAB Online service.

Exception: at one time it was possible to purchase an 8 month or 1 year student license through campus bookstores. I have not heard of that lately but I do not know if they stopped offering it.
