genetic algorithm for scheduling problem

my problem is scheduling problem. for example if I have 2 jobs, each job has 2 tasks and I need to perform these tasks by 2 machines in order to minimize the finishing time of each job. I would like to use genetic algorithm. My question is could I use gene with more than one bit so that first bit represent the job and second bit represent the task like (1,2) (1,1) (2,1) (2,2) to create initial population. note that each task will handle one time.
