Why are my variables not showing up in the workspace?

When I create variables they are not showing up in the workspace for some reason.

Let's say I write a = 5+5. The workspace remains empty. Then I proceed with the following: b = a+a. I get the answer b = 20. The workspace still remains empty but both a and b are "in the system" because MATLAB was able to give an answer for the second calculation.

Does anyone know what I can do to see the variables again?

I've already restarted MATLAB a million times and tried this in different folders. The problem persists.

It wasnt a script issue. Now it started working fine again. I think it was just MATLAB acting strangely!
