I am using the symbolic tool box and have generated a number that has over 25,000 digits and would like to store that number in it's entirety onto a disk file.

I have generated an extremely large number and would now like to stream or serialize it to a disk file so i can search and manipulate this number which is now over 25,000 digits long. I am new to Matlab and my not yet know where to look for this answer.

One option would be to save it as a string array —

You might want to save it initially as a sym object, and then see how it can be recovered. A 250-element string array that converts the initial sym variable result requires 638 Bytes, so yoiu can scale that up to see what the storage requirements would be for your variable result.

You should understand the use of VPA will not create a form with the full number of digits, unless you already know how many digits the number has.

Xc is just a character string. (I could also have used string, depending on if you want the number in a character or a string form. Depends what you want to do with it.) You can save it as you wish. And it contains all 24609 correct digits of that number. For example:

Xc(end)

ans = '1'

is the units digit of 17^20000 truly a 1? Note that powers of integers that end in 7 will cycle through the digits in the sequence... 1, 7, 9, 3, 1, 7, 9, 3, ...

So the zeroth power of 17 ends in a 1, as well as the 4th power, etc. All powers of 17 that are congruent to 0, mod 4 end in a 1. (That is easy to prove by induction.) And 20000 is a multiple of 4, so the units digits of 17^20000 is indeed a 1.

The virtue of using char or string to directly convert the number to a string is it does not care how long the number is. If you use vpa, then you need to know how many digits are in the number in advance.

Anyway, once the number has been converted to a character form, you can now use any tools you wish to save it to a text file. For example, here is an easy way to do it:

writelines(Xc,'MyBigNumber')

which writes the character string to a text file named MyBigNumber in your current directory. If all you want to do is save the number for future use so it can be read back in, then use save to put it into a .mat file. But then you do not need to convert the number to a string, as save has no problem saving a symbolic number.
