Figure no longer comes with MenuBar and tools the

Recently, without a concious change on my part, my figures lack the MenuBar and the icons underneath it. I would like my figure to have the components highlighted in yellow in the attached screen capture, by default, as they have always been for me.

The missing components started happening when I open a saved *.fig, but sometimes also when plotting "fresh". I restarted my PC thinking it may help, but it had not.

I discovered I can return the menubar to each figure by "set(gcf, 'MenuBar', 'figure')". I have not discovered how to return the icons.Can you please help making the image below the default to all figures?

You can try

set(groot,'defaultFigureMenubar','figure')
set(groot,'defaultFigureToolbar','figure')

to have the menu bar and tool bar show up by default in new figures.

Thank you, but this does not work for me. I tried these two commands, than re-opened a graph, but it is still missing. It does not bring back the menue/tools even when running these commands after opening a graph that lackes these required features.

As noted previously, set(gcf, 'MenuBar', 'figure') still brings back the menue features. With your hint, set(gcf, 'ToolBar', 'figure') brings back the tools, for this figure only.

I would appreciate ideas for a permanent solution.

p.s. I have not mentioned that I am creating the graphs using the live editor because I thought it does not matter. However, experiminting with directly running my function from the command window vs. as part of the live script editor, it makes the differance! When running vis the live editor I have the problem of missing tools and menue, even when opening the saved graph later, while a graph that was created in an independant call is totally fine. I hope this give you a clue how to permanently fix my graphs. Thanks!

Maybe the figure's WindowStyle is 'modal', in which case the tool bar and menu bar do not appear. You can try setting the WindowStyle to 'normal' (or 'docked' if that's what's called for).

set(gcf,'WindowStyle','normal')

Experimenting with Live Editor, I found that after running this,

set(groot,'defaultFigureMenubar','figure')
set(groot,'defaultFigureToolbar','figure')

the tool bar and menu bar show up when a new figure is created, except the tool bar has no icons (there is space for the icons and the buttons appear to work correctly, but no icons appear) and some menu items are blank (they also appear to work correctly however).

So maybe something in your code is turning the menu bar and tool bar off in your figures, e.g., setting the figure's Menubar and Toolbar properties to 'none' or setting the figure's WindowStyle property to 'modal'.

I think this is not it (assuming I understood what you said). I tried by opening a saved graph that has the problem (by double clicking it), and commanding: set(gcf,'WindowStyle','normal'); set(groot,'defaultFigureMenubar','figure'); set(groot,'defaultFigureToolbar','figure'). Nothing had happened to the graph (still missing the tools & menue).

The lines

set(groot,'defaultFigureMenubar','figure')
set(groot,'defaultFigureToolbar','figure')

or equivalently

set(groot,'defaultFigureMenubar','figure','defaultFigureToolbar','figure')

change the default settings, so those lines do not affect existing figures; only figures created after executing those lines will be affected, in that they should have the tool bar and menu bar when they are created.

In order to test on an existing figure, you would do

set(gcf,'Menubar','figure')
set(gcf,'Toolbar','figure')

or equivalently

set(gcf,'Menubar','figure','Toolbar','figure')

or, including setting the WindowStyle as well

set(gcf,'Menubar','figure','Toolbar','figure','WindowStyle','normal')

THanks again! I placed set(groot,'defaultFigureMenubar','figure','defaultFigureToolbar','figure')

at the top of my plotting function, called from the live script.

The good news: now the graphs seems fine - when I open the saved graph it has th emenue and tools.

The less than good: Matlab now generates many errors. These do not seem to interfere with its ability to save the graphs, but they clutter the report. I placed an example below.

Those errors do not apear when running my function (that includes the new line) directly from the command line, only via the live script. Another interesting observation is that not all my sub_functions generating various graphs cause these errors (but I can't put my finger on the differance... they all plot and save graphs).
