I am trying to display the degree symbol ° in the Y-axis on a plot using Matlab 2015a. But it is not working, does anyone know why?

This is what I'm using:

ylabel('Average Monthly Temperature (^{o}C)','FontSize',14);

deg_sign = char(0176)

or you can just enter °.

it is not working for me

 yt=get(gca,'ytick');
    for k=1:numel(yt)
        yt1{k} = string([num2str(yt(k)) 'º'])
        yt2{k,1} = sprintf([num2str(yt(k)) '%c'],char(0176))
    end
%yticklabels(yt1) 
    yticklabels(yt2) 

if you write yt1 or yt2 it will show it correctly written on command windows but it is not showed on the graph. If you change º or char(0176) for whatever other character... it is perfectly showed in the graph...

I wonder if you have accidentally set default Text interpreter to latex ? What shows up if you do

ax = gca; ax.YAxis.TickLabelInterpreter
