Plotting sphere error using surf

Error using surf (line 82) Z must be a matrix, not a scalar or vector.

[x z y] = sphere;
 a=[    0.2627    0.2677    0.0479    0.0723  ]   
% a=[x position    z position   y position   radius]

surf(x*a(1,4)+a(1,1),z*a(1,4)+a(1,2),y*a(1,4)+a(1,3));
