Importing a set of files, extracting individual average of certain variables and exporting them to excel

Hello,

I have a set of .dat files from which i need to extract few variables and find the individual average for them and export to excel. I need these dat files to be processed in a loop based on the file name and do the rest of the calculations as mentoined above. I am new to Matlab and can somebody help me in creating a function for this?

There are many examples of processing files in a loop available--what have you tried?
