Why is the result of xmlread null?

I am using this command to read xml file:

DOMnode = xmlread('parameter.xml');

but it returns null. I need to change some values from this xml file but it does not return anything.

The orignal parameter. xml has value like:

<variable id="MIG" value="3" description="Change in MIG" />

Any help is appreciated.
