How to perform multi-planar reformation in CT/MR images?

I have a 3D matrix (say 512*512*128) which represents a 3D CT volume.
How can i extract a slice from the 3D volume in any desired direction?
This can be done by either imwarp or imrotate3 functions. However, they take quite a long time when the matrix size increases.
Is there any faster and more efficient way to accomplish this?
