Asset Framework (AF)

Intuitive repository for organizing and contextualizing sensor-based data managed by PI Server

Highlights

  • Single repository for organizing data, making it easy to share, search, and find
  • Flexible hierarchy allows elements to be grouped by relationships (parent-child, connectivity)
  • Integrates multiple data sources, including Data Archives and external relational databases
  • Exposes data to clients such as PI Vision™, PI DataLink®, or PI ProcessBook® to build displays or run calculations
  • Support for millions of elements
  • Perform real-time calculations, including advanced functions via MATLAB Production Server

Description

Asset Framework

Asset Framework (AF) is a component of PI Server™ that makes it easy for users to organize, and share their PI System® data. This repository allows users to create hierarchical, asset-centric models of objects, and equipment grouped by specific relationships (parent-child, connectivity).  It integrates, contextualizes, refines, references, and further analyzes data from multiple sources, including one or more Data Archives and non-PI sources such as external relational databases. Data can be automatically converted between units of measure.

AF can expose data to other PI System components, such as PI Vision, PI DataLink, or PI ProcessBook, where it can be used to build displays, run calculations, deliver important information, and more. With its rich set of features and functions, Asset Framework is the preferred way for users to interact with their PI System data.

Asset Analytics is the feature in Asset Framework that allows users to create and manage analyses. An analysis reads values of AF attributes, performs calculations, and writes results to other attributes. Asset Framework with Asset Analytics can natively connect to a MATLAB Product Server cluster offering advanced analytics functions. This allows users to execute user-defined MATLAB calculations in a real-time streaming fashion using any data available within their PI System data infrastructure. See our reference architecture page for details on how to create Actionable Analytics with OSIsoft PI System and MATLAB Production Server.

PI Server

The foundation of the PI System™ is the PI Server, which includes technologies that work together to optimize data storage, transformation, and delivery throughout an enterprise. The PI Server includes sophisticated (but easy to use) calculation tools that transform raw data, combine data values from multiple systems into robust analyses, automate calculation of vital day-to-day metrics, and deliver new insights.

  • The PI Server includes the following capabilities:
  • Stores time-series Data (Data Archive)
  • Organizes data, making it easy to share, search, and find (Asset Framework)
  • Defines process events to deepen insights (Event Frames)
  • Compares batches (Batch)
  • Automatic notifications (Notification)
  • Continuous system availability (High Availability)
  • System monitoring (PI Interfaces for System Monitoring)
  • System management (PI System Management Tools or PI SMT, and PI System Directory)
  • Data security
  • Perform real-time calculations (Asset Analytics)

The PI System: Data Infrastructure

With the explosion of data, it is no longer efficient or cost-effective to use conventional methods for accessing silos of data. It takes the PI System to connect disparate sources of sensor-based time-series data and deliver the right information to the right people at the right time in the right context. As businesses expand into sensor-enabled equipment, more assets are streaming more data – increasing the need for and the value of the PI System.

OSIsoft has installations in 127 countries and is widely used across manufacturing, energy, utilities, pharmaceuticals, life sciences, data centers, facilities, and the process industries, as well as the public sector and the federal government.
