I had an error in the web version Matlab, so I exited and came back in, and this boy was plotted.

As others have replied, there is an old blog post of mine that gives the mostly full story.
Usually, people see this strange and hard-to-see picture when they accidentally call image with no input arguments. You can then tweak a few graphics properties to see the picture more clearly.
