WLAN PHY and MAC Modeling with Simulink | Design of Networked Wireless Transceivers, Part 3
From the series: Design of Networked Wireless Transceivers
The wireless local area network (WLAN) implies all the IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n/p/ac/ax standards for high-speed, secure, and reliable wireless network connections for indoor and outdoor applications. The WLAN data rate has increased from 52 Mbps of 802.11a to 14 Gbps by 802.11ax. The signal modulation commonly used in the WLAN’s physical layer (PHY) is OFDM. The essential function in the WLAN’s media access control layer (MAC) is the carrier sense multiple access and collision avoidance (CSMA/CA) scheme. In this video, we briefly introduce a Simulink® model for a wireless network with OFDM PHY and CSMA/CA MAC. The PHY modeling is complied with 802.11a, and the MAC modeling implements the CSMA/CA function.
This model provides methodology on using Simulink to simulate a complicated wireless network with OFDM modulation and CSMA/CA MAC simultaneously. Simulating the PHY and MAC together reveals certain critical scenarios which may not been seen when the PHY and MAC are designed separately. Also, this WLAN system model provides the Simulink or Stateflow® blocks for the key functions in OFDM PHY and CSMA/CA MAC. With this model, people can study the various system behaviors of PHY and MAC, and the interactions between them. All the blocks in the system model are supported by MathWorks HDL Coder™, which may greatly facilitate SDR+FPGA prototyping and ASIC implementation.
